Our search strategy focused on the key words “penis” and “burns” “penile” and “burns” “genital” and “burns” and “perineum” and “burns”. No temporal, regional, publication status or language restrictions were set. The literature was systematically reviewed up to December 2009 using the electronic database Medline. The medical literature is reviewed to answer “Which agents cause genital burns” and “How are these usually managed in terms of wound control and preservation of bladder drainage”. Most genital burns are part of larger surface injuries, whereas isolated genital burns are uncommon.
In a review of the hospital charts from four burn centers (Antwerp, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Galveston), 1–4 it is shown that genital burns were present in 2.8–13% of hospital admissions. This body region is usually well protected against traumatic agents, such as flames, hot liquids and caustic chemical substances.
